About Luther Memorial
Located in the Lincoln Square/Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago, we have served the nearby community for 110 years. Founded by German and Swedish immigrants, Luther Memorial was one of the first English-speaking Lutheran congregations on the North side of Chicago.
Who We Are
We are a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. LMC is a member of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the ELCA and is a "Reconciling in Christ" Congregation. We invite all people to join in our spiritual journey.
Welcome and Affirmation
As a community of the people of God, we are committed to providing a safe, healthy and diverse environment for spiritual growth. Our world can often be a place of alienation. Christ calls us to reconciliation and wholeness. We profess our comittment to invite and openly welcome all to hear and experience the word of God, to share communion and the promise of the risen Christ. Further, we believe that the Holy Spirit can work with and through all beings created by God.
The apostle Paul tells us that, in Christ, "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female" (Galatians 3:28). Christ has made us one. It is for this purpose we affirm that:
- Persons of all races, national and ethnic origins, ages mental and emotional conditions or capacity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification, marital status, economic situation, or struggling with addictions share with each other the worth which comes from being unique individuals created by God;
- All persons named and unnamed above are welcome within the fellowship of our congregation, and the membership of our congregation upon making the same affirmation of faith that all other members make; and,
- As members, all are expected and encouraged to share in worship, sacraments, fellowship, and general life of this congregation.
We extend this welcome and affirmation in the recognition of Christ's commands, in the great Commission: "Go into the world and preach the Good news to everyone, everywhere" (Mark 16:15).
