Who we are and what we do
You may not be alone in asking, What is WELCA and why should I get involved? Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a women's group that is much more than the ladies staked out in the kitchen or the organizers of annual church rummage and flea market fundraisers.
Here at Luther Memorial we can be proud that our WELCA members have accomplished much more. We are a diverse group of mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters that have found a common purpose in serving our church and causes that we collectively have deemed important.
The mission statement of WELCA says it all: "As a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society and the world."
W.E.L.C.A. raised more than $5,000 last year, to benefit LMC directly and for numerous charities in Chicago and elsewhere such as the Ravenswood Food Pantry and Night Ministry and a Palestinian Lutheran School in Ramallah.
LMC has two active WELCA Circles that meet at the church monthly for Bible study, fellowship, support and planning of the events that WELCA sponsors throughout the year.

Mary Circle typically meets at noon on the second Friday of the month at church.

Eunice Circle usually meets at 7:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month, at the home of one of the members.
